Castle Hohenwerfen, Torture Chamber and Tavern

Although I am about 4 posts behind in some of the fun stuff we have been able to do…I will honor my promise of reporting on our most recent Castle visit, because Castles are just that cool.

On the ride home from Großarl, and not far from Salzburg, we finally made the stop to visit Hohenwerfen Fortress.  We have passed it many times before and despite the haze, it lies in the most staggering valley with high cliffs and craggy rock walls.

I have posted this previously, unfortunately, neither days had weather clear enough to depict the grandeur of this area

Note the clock bell tower on the right- the audio tour takes you up there, with amazing views….

Honestly, the torture chamber and the Dungeon was truly impressive.

Impressive torture chamber and Dungeon.

Too dark to film in the dungeon, but it was stirring to view a real dungeon, and no lie- they had a recording of a man moaning down below.  Totally cheesy, but I still liked it.   Then again, I am so easily amused.

More of torture chamber. THE RACK!

Other instruments of torture- thumb torture, shin torture. Creepy.

They allowed you to walk all the up to the Bell Tower-

And again, parents of the year- here, have  sucker so we can listen to the tour.  It was the only way.

They allowed you to walk all the up to the Bell Tower-here Mom and Eliot made it up all the stairs to view the bell, if we had not been freezing, I would have stopped longer to enjoy the panoramic view.

how can one report on an castle and not include a Canon??

We truly were freezing during this tour (with our English audio tour glued to our ears)…so a stop in the Tavern was a must.  Thankfully it was heated with Pizza and beer, of course.  Eliot really was a trooper the whole day…

sure wish this was sunny...

But, chances are, if the weather improves, and we had the time, we are probably not paying the 14 Euros per person to do this again.

The countdown until grandparents arrive has begun- less than 4 weeks to go!  Time has flown by- not sure what else in Austria we will be able to catch, we are open to suggestions.

We have planned a trip to Prague and Berlin, Reed will see Rome briefly, of course Munich happens with flights in and out and it looks like Vienna will also happen…anything else?

We anxiously await your reply,

Yours in castles and dungeons,

Kim and Reed & Eliot Max
